There’s a chill in the air and the leaves are changing: fall is here! That means a whole new world of fashion. Chilly weather means it’s time to break out the long sleeves and the sweaters, the knit caps and the leggings. But then there’s that nagging feeling that all these fall-weather clothes you have are at least a year old, and they’re starting to look a little less stylish to you. What can you do? Well, you can dig into this fall style guide and start making a new shopping list, for one! Here’s what you need to know about what’s in this fall.
What colors to wear this fall
The arrival of fall means fall colors are in, and this year is no exception. You’ll want the autumn feeling that you get from whiskey browns and rich oranges, reds, and yellows. Think of the leaves changing and you’ll be on the right track. While white may be out after Labor Day (though you shouldn’t take that rule too seriously), lots of lighter colors are still fair game. Yellow is a great choice, and you’ll have a lot of leeways to pick a favorite between this year’s trendy sapphire yellow and timeless fall-favorite goldenrod yellows. Your yellow dress might just be one of the single most important things you have in your fall wardrobe.
The cuts and clothes that will matter this fall
Fall is for layering, so be sure to invest in a great jacket (or two) and a couple heavier coats. Long coats are in this year, so wrap yourself right up in this season’s big, warm, and wonderful overwear. Layer them over great tops and dresses or simple jeans and slacks. If you’re going with pants, embrace the high waist and lean toward pant legs that end above the ankle. You can keep your ankles and legs warm with great boots, which brings us to our next section.
How to accessorize this fall
Some of us wear boots year-round, but as the rougher weather moves in and things get chillier, there are more reasons than ever to wrap our feet, ankles, and as much of our legs as we dare in gorgeous boots. Thick heels and tough materials are in, and you can’t go wrong with classic browns and blacks in terms of colors. Of course, if you want to get more daring, there’s nothing wrong with making a statement with your boots.
Your favorite jewelry will make you feel great all year round, but that doesn’t mean you can’t tailor your accessory game a bit as the seasons change. Think about colors with metal tones, according to experts at a jewelry store in Mountain Brook, AL. Gold in fall and silver in winter can look especially appropriate. You can also, of course, use the tone of your jewelry to offset or enhance the colors in your clothes — your yellow dress with a silver necklace might make a perfect fall outfit, for instance. Other non-metal materials and tones can be just right for the season, too: as summer changes into fall, you may want to swap out your turquoise for tortoiseshell.
Where to shop this fall
So where can you get all of this hip stuff? In hip stores, of course. Steer well clear of cheap department stores, discount shops, big-box stores, and e-commerce giants. Instead, head to the classier places that carry reliable and well-made clothes. That can mean fancier departments stores and designer labels, but it doesn’t have to. You can get great clothes for less by targeting local shops and online boutiques. Online boutiques are a particular sweet spot, and since they have lower overhead (thanks to being online), they can offer clothes for less. But they’re also small, hip operations, which means you’ll get quality goods in the right cuts and styles.

I never realized that I do dress in fall colors. They have always been my colors, and love booties they feel so comfortable. I guess in a way fall has always been my favorites. Since I retired I don’t really buy a lot of clothes since I don’t need them for work. I always buy a couple of fall colored sweaters
Yellow is great for the fall. I love burgundy with camel brown. Layers layers layers! At least where it’s cold!
We don’t really have much of a fall here in Tucson, as the weather is still warm and the trees are still green. But I do love the cooler evenings.
I do agree local shops and online boutiques are great places to shop.
